From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar."

The Jews were trying to intimidate Pilate, he bent over the pressure. He could have stopped it all, but refused.
God was carrying out a plan that had been devised before the beginning of time.
