Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

The Hebrew word for God in this verse and in Genesis 1:1 is ELOHIM, which is the plural form of EL. However, even though it's plural, it is used with singular verbs and adjectives. This aligns itself with the description of Jesus in John 1: "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God.... and dwelt among us." In time, Christians came to call this concept the TRINIITY: God is 3 persons, but 1 God.
