He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

The tree of life provided immortality. It was a gift from God in the garden to his creation. They were allowed to eat from it until they disobeyed. They / mankind were then separated from it. The rest of the biblical theme is redeeming mankind to a relationship with God and eternal life.
