Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

This is the first time tribulation is used in the New Testament and it's referring to a believer suffering persecution because of the word of God. Tribulation usually refers to the elect suffering because of their faith at the hands of the world. Occasionally, it refers to God causing the tribulation on his own people, though.
