For all the world to wonder, it would probably have to be an actual death from the wound. Otherwise, all the world wondering would be hyperbole. This event might also tie in with Revelation 11:7, "...the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit..." and Revelation 17:8, "The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition..." (where "is not" means dead)
