So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

For a long time now, I've wondered what exactly does this mean and does it apply today. What did God mean by pollute? Does shedding blood literally pollute our environment or did he mean it in a spiritual sense?
It sounds as if the only way to make things right or to prevent the "pollution" is to shed the blood of the people who commit murder.
