And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

I believe God did this to help prevent evil from coming into the world again... or to show that He is still God, and He should be the center. I think this was to also prevent a form idolatry.
