By the sin of one (Adam) death entered, by the death of one (Jesus Christ, God's only Son) we were given Grace and Mercy. To refuse God's forgiveness is to say "I can do it by myself - I don't need you to be good enough" (It's exactly that - relying on your own ability to be good enough)
