The people challenge God's statement and want to be shown how God has shown his love. Malachi contrasts the treatment of Israel to Edom. God chose Jacob because God decided to choose him, and not because of any existing or future goodness in Jacob.Any goodness in Jacob came because God had chosen him.
God choice of Jacob over Esau was choosing Israel over Edom. God sovereignty and actively chooses some for salvation, and sovereignty and actively chooses all others for damnation. If this is true why bother?
