aManasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Hephzibah.

aHe did evil in the sight of the Lord, baccording to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord dispossessed before the sons of Israel.

For ahe rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and bhe erected altars for Baal and made an Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel had done, and cworshiped all the host of heaven and served them.

aHe built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, "bIn Jerusalem I will put My name."

aHe made his son pass through the fire, bpracticed witchcraft and used divination, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord provoking Him to anger.

Then ahe set the carved image of Asherah that he had made, in the house of which the Lord said to David and to his son Solomon, "bIn this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever.

"For the sons of Judah have done that which is evil in My sight," declares the Lord, "they have aset their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it.

"Because they have aforsaken Me and have bmade this an alien place and have burned sacrifices in it to cother gods, that neither they nor their forefathers nor the kings of Judah had ever known, and because they have filled this place with the dblood of the innocent

and have built the ahigh places of Baal to burn their bsons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, a thing which I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever enter My mind;

therefore, behold, adays are coming," declares the Lord, "when this place will no longer be called bTopheth or cthe valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather the valley of Slaughter.
