I will arejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in bmy God; For He has cclothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And das a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the aearth brings forth its sprouts, And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up, So the Lord GOD will bcause crighteousness and praise To spring up before all the nations. The aSpirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bbring good news to the cafflicted; He has sent me to dbind up the brokenhearted, To eproclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To aproclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the bday of vengeance of our God; To ccomfort all who mourn,To agrant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The boil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called coaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. Then they will arebuild the ancient ruins, They will raise up the former devastations; And they will repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations.aStrangers will stand and pasture your flocks, And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers. But you will be called the apriests of the Lord; You will be spoken of as bministers of our God. You will eat the cwealth of nations, And in their riches you will boast.Instead of your ashame you will have a bdouble portion, And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion. Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land, cEverlasting joy will be theirs. For I, the Lord, alove justice, I hate robbery in the burnt offering; And I will faithfully give them their recompense And make an beverlasting covenant with them. Then their offspring will be known among the nations, And their descendants in the midst of the peoples. All who see them will recognize them Because they are the aoffspring whom the Lord has blessed.

For the word of the cross is afoolishness to bthose who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is cthe power of God.For it is written, "aI WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE."aWhere is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of bthis age? Has not God cmade foolish the wisdom of dthe world? For since in the wisdom of God athe world through its wisdom did not come to know God, bGod was well-pleased through the cfoolishness of the message preached to dsave those who believe. For indeed aJews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom;but we preach aChrist crucified, bto Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles cfoolishness, but to those who are athe called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ bthe power of God and cthe wisdom of God.Because the afoolishness of God is wiser than men, and bthe weakness of God is stronger than men.For consider your acalling, brethren, that there were bnot many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;but aGod has chosen the foolish things of bthe world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of bthe world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of athe world and the despised God has chosen, bthe things that are not, so that He may cnullify the things that are,so that ano man may boast before God.But by His doing you are in aChrist Jesus, who became to us bwisdom from God, and crighteousness and dsanctification, and eredemption,so that, just as it is written, "aLET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE Lord."

For we are His workmanship, acreated in bChrist Jesus for cgood works, which God dprepared beforehand so that we would ewalk in them. And you were adead in your trespasses and sins,in which you aformerly walked according to the course of bthis world, according to cthe prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in dthe sons of disobedience.Among them we too all aformerly lived in bthe lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were cby nature dchildren of wrath, eeven as the rest. But God, being arich in mercy, because of bHis great love with which He loved us,even when we were adead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (bby grace you have been saved),and araised us up with Him, and bseated us with Him in cthe heavenly places in dChrist Jesus,so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing ariches of His grace in bkindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For aby grace you have been saved bthrough faith; and that not of yourselves, it is cthe gift of God;anot as a result of works, so that bno one may boast.

Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed. Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian. For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

Therefore, listen to this message from the LORD, you scoffing rulers in Jerusalem. You boast, “We have struck a bargain to cheat death and have made a deal to dodge the grave. The coming destruction can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge made of lies and deception.” Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.

“Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace.

But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.” So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a person has life.” But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith. Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it? I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ. In the same way, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God. What’s more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would declare the Gentiles to be righteous because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, “All nations will be blessed through you.” So all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
